Maui jim Sunglasses an upgrade?

Expensive Sunglasses, Cheap Lesson

I was gifted a pair of expensive sunglasses. They quickly became my favorite pair, which is usually how these stories start.

Then I dropped them.

The frame survived, but one of the glass lenses cracked right down the middle.

Since they were a gift and were otherwise in excellent condition, I decided to look into having them repaired instead of throwing them away. What I discovered surprised me.

The replacement lenses available for the sunglasses were not glass. Most of the replacement options were high-quality polycarbonate lenses.

At first, that sounded like a downgrade. Glass is often associated with quality, clarity, and scratch resistance. However, polycarbonate has one major advantage: it doesn’t shatter or crack nearly as easily when dropped.

The more I looked into it, the more it seemed like replacing the cracked glass lens with a modern polycarbonate lens might actually be an upgrade for everyday use. The sunglasses would be lighter, more impact resistant, and far less likely to suffer the same fate the next time they hit the ground.

Sometimes a repair is more than just fixing something broken. Sometimes it is an opportunity to improve the original design.

In this case, a cracked glass lens may end up becoming a more durable pair of sunglasses than I started with.
